More than four million Australians know families whose children may not be properly cared for due to alcohol abuse, a survey has found. The research, released by the Salvation Army on Monday, also revealed that in the past year, problem drinking had caused disruptions in more than three million Australian families.

Doctors are increasingly the target of verbal and physical aggression from colleagues and patients' relatives, as well as from patients, a new study has found.
Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek today announced the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments had signed an agreement that will deliver at least 2,600 additional elective surgery operations in Tasmania.

The first additional elective surgery procedures are expected to be undertaken before the end of this month.
